Nine Years, One Date
Some of what follows was luck. The rest, they chose, every single time the door opened again.
They first met on the air. Neither imagined it would become the beginning of their story. They were living separate lives then, and the timing wasn't theirs. Not yet.
Two years later, they ran into each other on a Friday night at McCarthy's in downtown San Luis Obispo. Audrey was putting together a fundraiser for people displaced by the Napa fires. Adam asked if he could help promote it on the air. She said yes.
The following Wednesday, she came into the studio to talk about the fundraiser. When the segment wrapped, Adam sent a text.
Dinner ran long. Outside Black Sheep that night, Adam leaned in to kiss her cheek. She turned her head. It landed somewhere better than either of them planned.
One year later, on the same date, Adam arranged for them to return to the place where it all began. Veggie Butcher had closed for good, but for one night, the empty restaurant became theirs again. He brought in a single table, had dinner delivered, and they sat in the very same spot where they had shared their first date.
At Hearst Castle, at Adam's favorite place on the estate, he asked the question with the ocean and hills stretching out behind them. Thanks to a little help from the foundation's executive director, they had the entire place to themselves.
The date was never a coincidence. Nine years after their first dinner, Adam and Audrey will be married on the anniversary itself. The day that started their story will now begin its next chapter.
Their story did not begin all at once. It took a few chance meetings, one well-timed text, and the patience to let the timing become theirs.
